October 21, 2026 | Coverage: October 22–28, 2026

The Federal Reserve [held its benchmark interest rate at 3.75%–4.00%](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20261028a.htm) Wednesday, voting 10–2 to keep borrowing costs steady. The plot twist came from the dissenters: Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack both favored a quarter-point increase. Apparently, even the Fed's hawks have different definitions of patience.

The committee described economic activity as strong, consumer spending as resilient, and inflation as elevated. Meanwhile, the [10-year Treasury yield hovered around 5%](https://www.federalreserve.gov/Releases/H15/Update/) heading into the meeting, down from 5.13% on October 21. The Fed may be sitting still, but borrowing costs remain rather expensive company.

### Wall Street: A Few Stocks Did the Group Project

Tuesday brought another technology-led rally. The [S&P 500 gained 0.6% to 7,722.60](https://apnews.com/article/wall-street-stocks-dow-nasdaq-eae2932c0c253be1039e1545909656a8), while the Nasdaq climbed 1.2% to 26,477.81. The Dow managed a considerably quieter 16-point advance. Beneath those gains, however, most S&P 500 stocks actually declined. AI-related companies carried much of the load.

Following Wednesday's Fed announcement, [major indexes remained close to unchanged](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/nasdaq-futures-rise-sk-hynix-boosts-chips-before-fed-decision-earnings-2026-10-28/). The broader interpretation is familiar: investors remain willing to pay for AI growth, although the index-level enthusiasm continues to run ahead of market participation.

### AI Financing: Silicon Valley Discovers the Loan Officer

The AI boom has reached a fascinating milestone: borrowing enormous sums of money to buy chips from companies helping finance the borrowing.

On Monday, Bank of America, Citi, Morgan Stanley, and Blackstone [lined up $63 billion in financing](https://www.reuters.com/legal/transactional/wall-street-banks-blackstone-line-up-63-billion-finance-broadcom-chips-anthropic-2026-10-26/) for Broadcom AI chips and networking equipment that will be leased to Anthropic. Approximately $43.5 billion involves senior debt, with Broadcom providing financial support tied to the equipment's residual value.

Meanwhile, Meta [expanded its planned equity fundraising to as much as $97.5 billion](https://www.reuters.com/legal/transactional/meta-launches-35-billion-stock-offering-fund-ai-expansion-2026-10-26/), including a proposed $60 billion share-sale program expected to begin in 2027. The larger story is moving beyond chip demand toward the increasingly elaborate financial machinery required to fund it. Moody's has warned that repeated transactions could increase financial risks for suppliers such as Broadcom. Artificial intelligence is developing quite an appetite, and the expense account is getting interesting.

### Oil: Peace Talks, Meet the Missile Department

Crude prices spent the week trying to decide whether diplomacy or missiles deserved the bigger headline. On Tuesday, Brent [settled at $113.88 per barrel](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/oil-eases-middle-east-diplomacy-hopes-saudi-attacks-keep-supply-worries-alive-2026-10-27/), while West Texas Intermediate slipped to $99.90 as renewed diplomatic discussions offered some relief.

By early Wednesday afternoon, Brent had [climbed to approximately $115.43 and WTI to $102.82](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/oil-prices-rise-after-attack-saudi-arabian-refinery-reignites-supply-concerns-2026-10-28/). Fighting in Yemen intensified, and Houthi forces claimed an attack on Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura refinery, a claim awaiting Saudi confirmation at the time of reporting. U.S. crude inventories also declined by 1.9 million barrels for the week ended October 23.

The market is pricing a continuing supply-disruption risk into energy. For inflation, transportation costs, and corporate margins, those extra dollars per barrel carry consequences well beyond the oil patch.

### The Consumer Found a Pulse. The Wallet Has Questions.

Americans felt better about the economy in October, at least on paper. The Conference Board's [Consumer Confidence Index jumped to 91.7](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/us-consumer-confidence-increased-in-october-302920731.html), up from 84.2 in September. Expectations also improved to 72.6, although plans for spending on many durable goods and services remained subdued. The mood brightened considerably faster than the shopping list.

Businesses, meanwhile, continued ordering equipment. [September durable goods orders rose 1.8% to $345.4 billion](https://www.census.gov/manufacturing/m3/adv/current/index.html), with orders excluding transportation advancing 0.5%. AI-related investment remains an important source of equipment demand. Together, the readings suggest an economy supported by business investment and improving consumer sentiment, even as households remain sensitive to prices.

### The Sport's Equinox Has Cometh and Goeth

Monday delivered a rare [sports equinox](https://apnews.com/article/sports-equinox-fa91d91404961bf9f8d0f9169ecd060a), with the NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, and NHL all playing on the same evening. It was the 33rd such occurrence, giving American households approximately five competing reasons to seize the television remote.

Baseball supplied the week's best drama. After falling behind Milwaukee 3–0 in the World Series, the Tampa Bay Rays [rallied for a 4–3 victory in 12 innings](https://www.mlb.com/news/rays-win-world-series-game-4-2026) Tuesday to force Game 5. Ben Williamson delivered the walk-off hit, keeping Tampa Bay's championship hopes alive.

A rather expensive evening for Milwaukee fans who had already started planning the parade.
